In an unprecedented operation on Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), the Federal Police (PF), and the Navy located and seized a semi-submersible used by drug traffickers to send drugs to Europe.
The semi-submersible vessel was detected with the help of advanced technologies such as satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and aircraft equipped with special sensors. These resources enabled monitoring of suspicious movements in the rivers of the Amazon region.
The operation started with the use of FAB’s R-99 aircraft, specialized in surveillance, which identified hidden naval structures and unusual logistical activities. Data captured by satellites and aerial sensors were analyzed and shared with the Federal Police, which organized the land blockade of the vessel.
The geographic isolation of Marajó Island, due to its difficult access, has been exploited by criminal organizations that develop clandestine routes and strategies to avoid inspection.
The investigation gained momentum after the seizure of a similar submarine in Portugal in March this year. Following this, Brazilian authorities intensified the cross-referencing of electronic data and orbital images, managing to identify artisanal manufacturing points and river routes used for transatlantic drug trafficking.
